With over twenty thousand jewelers in the United States, it may surprise some that the vast majority are small companies with one or two locations. Though most of us only see and hear advertisements from major jewelry chains, the backbone of the industry has been and is still the neighborhood jeweler. One such jeweler is Emerald Bay Jewelry & Designs. Located in the village of Brookfield, Illinois, Emerald Bay and its’ owner Nicholas Digustino provide the community with products and services that locals have counted on for more than sixty years.
Nicholas Digustino grew up around people from the jewelry industry. He watched goldsmiths work at their craft, and watch repair professionals work at theirs. He is a lover of fine wrist watches, and while he may not admit to being a full blown collector, Nicholas admits that he’s at the one new watch a month level. Originally, Nicholas was hired as the manager of Emerald Bay. Many stores that remain in the same location for decades are run by generations of a family committed to and passionate about the store and its role in the community. For Nicholas, the same commitment and passion led him to purchase Emerald Bay seven years ago from its’ once owner and now employee, Colleen, who ran the store for over thirty years. Nicholas is proud of the store's history; many longtime customers have told him that his storefront has been a jewelers’ since the 1940’s. His dedication to keeping that history alive is part of what he sees as the mission of Emerald Bay.
In addition to being dedicated to full disclosure on all of the products Emerald Bay offers, they also provide a 100% guarantee of authenticity on all merchandise. Emerald Bay invites customers to collaborate with them on custom jewelry pieces, which evolve from line drawings into works of art with the help of Emerald Bay’s master metal smith and lapidarist, who has fifty years of bench experience. Nicholas has his own designs featured as well, including rings and pendants. The store offers a full range of jewelry, from engagement and bridal sets to colored gemstone pieces, fine watches and repair service for jewelry, watches and clocks.
Nicholas Digustino believes above all else that dedication to the customer is the key to success. He and his employees know that service based on integrity, honesty and education will create a customer who returns to Emerald Bay Jewelry & Designs, as they have been doing for generations.
The owners favorite stone? Nicholas is a fan of all things green; chrome diopside and tourmaline are among his favorites.
Favorite cut? As Nicholas says, “You can’t beat the round”.
