About Us
The jewelry and gemstone trade is one built on a foundation rich with history and tradition. Treasures once held by only the most powerful, passing from one empire to the next, can now be held and admired by a greater number of people than ever before. Advancements in not only exploration and mining but in the science and development of synthetics and treatments present the consumer of today with a spectrum of color only dreamed of by the emperors of a bygone era. With the advancement of science however, comes the added responsibility of disclosure; the duty and opportunity to celebrate rather than hide treatments that provide even those with the most meager of means a way to possess something beautiful.
For several years, we have observed an ever growing disconnect between consumers and the jewelry and gemstone trade. With the proliferation and success of online retailers, television sales channels and private sellers over the past decade, the average consumer has been presented with many more choices in not only product but in whom they do business with. Regretfully, the proper disclosure of treatments and synthetics has not kept pace with the growth of the industry. At the same time, the relationships between jewelers and their customers which were built on trust have become increasingly scarce.
The Jewelers Ethics Association (JEA) was formed to benefit all aspects of the industry and consumers alike. We will promote and uphold ethical standards within the jewelry and gemstone trade, including but not limited to the full disclosure of the myriad treatments and enhancements present in today’s marketplace. It is our firm belief that education of both seller and customer will foster an environment of trust sadly lacking in our industry; an environment free from the stigma of scandal and controversy which have so greatly fractured a once solid foundation.
Among our goals is an effort to promote businesses which uphold these standards, and to serve as a beacon that consumers may follow to companies they can trust.
